Beef and Broccoli

Beef and Broccoli is a classic takeout favorite that’s surprisingly easy to make at home. Tender slices of beef stir-fried with crisp broccoli in a savory, garlicky sauce create a meal that’s both satisfying and healthy. I first tried making this recipe when I wanted the flavors of Chinese takeout without the extra sugar and MSG. The result was a delicious, homemade version that became a family favorite almost instantly.

The key to this dish is balancing the tender beef with perfectly cooked broccoli. The sauce should coat every bite, delivering a rich, savory flavor without being overpowering. Served over rice or noodles, it becomes a complete meal that’s ideal for lunch or dinner.

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb (450 g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
    • 3 cups broccoli florets
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
    • ¼ cup soy sauce or tamari
    • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional for extra flavor)
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • ½ cup beef broth or water
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon sugar or honey
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

    Instructions

    1. Prepare the beef.
Slice the beef thinly against the grain. This ensures tenderness and prevents chewiness. Toss the slices with 1 teaspoon cornstarch and a pinch of salt and pepper. Let it sit for a few minutes while preparing the sauce.

    2. Make the sauce.
In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, beef broth, sesame oil, sugar or honey, and remaining cornstarch. Stir until smooth and set aside. This sauce will coat the beef and broccoli perfectly, creating a glossy, flavorful finish.

    3. Cook the broccoli.
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until bright green and slightly tender. Remove from the pan and set aside.

    4. Cook the beef.
Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the pan. Stir-fry the beef slices in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook each batch for 2–3 minutes until browned but still tender. Remove the beef and set aside.

    5. Combine everything.
Return the broccoli to the pan and add the garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the beef back into the pan, pour the sauce over everything, and toss to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.

    6. Serve immediately.
Serve hot over cooked rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions if desired. The dish is best enjoyed fresh, while the beef is tender and the broccoli still crisp.

    Tips & Variations

    • Beef Alternatives: Use chicken, pork, or tofu instead of beef for a different protein option.
    • Extra Veggies: Add bell peppers, snap peas, or carrots for additional color and nutrition.
    • Gluten-Free Option: Use tamari instead of soy sauce and check oyster sauce labels.
    • Marinade Tip: Marinating the beef in soy sauce and cornstarch for 10–15 minutes enhances tenderness.
    • Meal Prep: Cook the beef and broccoli separately and store in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
